Leather & Care Guide for Designer Finishes.
Not exhaustive....there are SO many!...but here's a listing of some of the leather finishes that I'm familiar with. I hope it helps.
Louis Vuitton Monogram Canvas was created in 1896 is supple and resistant. A timeless and durable finish its easy to care for and very robust. Avoid friction wherever possible, avoid prolonged contact with grease, make up and any material which may transfer their colour pigments (eg magazines, printed papers, etc), avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight and away from direct sources of heat. Protect from humidity and if the finish gets wet, just wipe away with an absorbent cloth. Store, lightly stuffed, (not flat or folded) in dustcover and air regularly)
Louis Vuitton Epi Leather first introduced in 1985 and was created to respond to the demand for more durable leather necessary in modern travel conditions. Epi leather is dyed all the way through and has a grainy texture which can withstand any weather condition. Easily cared for with lanolin leather wipes and gentle occasional dusting.

Louis Vuitton Exotic Crocodilians. Selected from the Niloticus and Porosus crododile and the Mississipiensis alligator, natural finishes are applied to deliver flexibility and satiny look. A patina is then applied by hand to bring a vintage finish to the skins. As protected by the Washington Convention, a CITES document should accompany all items created using these precious skins. Particularly sensitive to heat and humidity, (which can irreparably seperate scales from the skins) its recommend to avoid any cleansing products. Gentle, oil free polishes may be used and superficial stains can be wiped away with a clean, soft, dry cloth.
Louis Vuitton Exotic Lizard characterised by their smalls scales and specific grain, these individual qualities are retained and preserved in each hide during the tanning process. Natural finishes are applied to deliver flexibility and satiny look and a patina is then applied, by hand, to bring a vintage finish to the skins. Care instructions are as the same for Crocodilians.
Prada Saffiano - Made by a stamping method, Saffiano, is a calf hide textured leather with a diagonal, cross-hatch pattern, finished with a wax treatment, (ie a treated leather made with the texture pressed on it by a machine. Mulberry Natural Leather (Natural Vegetable Tanned or NVT) is a classic finish, this leather is produced using a natural vegetable tanning technique, and no finish is applied, keeping the skin entirely untreated, so as pure and as natural looking as possible. The soft leather can vary significantly in its shade and texture but each piece retains an individual grain pattern, making every bag made unique. As this leather ages it acquires a lovely worn-in appearance, softens naturally and gains a vintage patina, especially in the Oak colour finish. Collonil Waterstop Spray is recommended to give some surface protection against watermarks and Collonil Gel can be used to enhance surface and colour appearance. If the hide gets wet, just remove any residual water immediately, pack loosely with tissue paper (not newspaper!) and allow to dry naturally. Never place Natural Leather in direct sunlight or heat for prolonged periods as it may cause the colour to fade unevenly. Avoid rubbing Natural Leather against coloured/dyed clothing as colour transfer can occur eg: dark coloured dyes from clothing can migrate onto light coloured leathers and vice versa.
Mulberry Coloured Leather (Coloured Vegetable Tanned or CVT) is produced using a vegetable tanning technique to create a coloured finish. The final produce can vary in its shade and texture but each piece retains an individual grain pattern, making every bag made unique. If the hide gets wet, just remove any residual water immediately, pack loosely with tissue paper (not newspaper!) and allow to dry naturally. Avoid rubbing Natural Leather against coloured/dyed clothing as colour transfer can occur eg: dark coloured dyes from clothing can migrate onto light coloured leathers and vice versa.

Hermès Clemence Leather
Clemence, one of Hermès’s most popular leathers, is a large-grained skin that was originally created for luggage and first appeared in Hermès’ collections in 1992. The technique that produces this large grain is called Drumming, which softens the skin. Clemence, named for the daughter of the designer who introduced it into Hermès’ collections, is very similar to Togo. Derived from baby bull, Clemence is made from the male calf and Togo is made from the female. Clemence has a matte appearance, and the leather is soft and heavy; bags in this leather tend to be less structured than others, and Clemence tends to get slouchier over time. While Clemence is possibly the slouchiest and heaviest of Hermès’ leathers, it is also very durable, scratch-resistant, and can be refurbished. Please note that as the grain type is bigger and flatter than other leathers (such as grainy Togo), this may result in cracking around the edges of the bag, although this can easily be refurbished. Water can also produce unsightly blisters on the bag, so being careful around rain and other water is a must.
Tips for handling Clemence leather:
-Be careful around water, as water can cause water blisters that are almost impossible to remove. Always wipe down immediately after contact with water.
-If the heavy yet durable leather starts cracking around the edges, get it refurbished.
Hermès Togo Leather
Named after the African country Togo, and produced by a drumming process, it was initially introduced during Hermès’ Year of Africa, 1997. Togo leather is almost entirely scratch resistant and can be refurbished if veining starts to appear. Made from baby calfskin – the female version of Clemence – it has a fine grain, is scratch-resistant, easily refurbished and comparatively light. A beautiful but substantial leather that appears to be raised, yet has a smooth and fine texture. Easily distinguishable from Clemence by its smaller grain and the presence of veining, although not all Togo is veined. Togo may soften and slouch slightly over time, especially in larger pieces.
Benefits of Togo leather:
-Almost completely resilient to scratching.
-Easy to clean and can be refurbished incredibly quickly.
-Has a raised grainy appearance, yet is very smooth to touch.
-The grain is finer than Clemence
Hermès Box Calf Leather
Named after the 19th Century English shoemaker Joseph Box, it's the oldest type of leather used in Hermes bags. Box (or veau leather) has an incredibly smooth finish that offers a glossy and sophisticated finish. Blemishes, scratches and water marks are easily noticeable, but after time they blend into the bag and create a mirror-like texture. Box tends to be stiff and holds its shape very well but cannot get wet as the leather will blister if it is not immediately dried.
Tips for handling box calf leather:
-Be careful when handling this bag in rainy weather, as water marks will ruin the finish.
-If you end up with scratches or other blemishes, try lightly buffing the bag to blend.
Hermès Epsom Leather
Introduced in 2004 to replace Courchevel unlike other leather, Epsom leather is a heat-printed embossed leather, which means that the pattern pressed into the leather is not the actual; grain, giving the bag a laminated appearance that is rigid and structured. This compressed type of leather holds true to its shape in all instances and is completely resilient to scratches. With the ‘laminated’ exterior, cleaning an Epsom leather bag is as simple as wiping it with a damp towel, making it a very simple and handy type of lightweight leather. However, please note because the grain is stamped, it can wear away at points of contact, and those wear points cannot be refurbished
Benefits of Epsom Leather
-Quite rigid and completely resilient to scratches.
-Incredibly easy to clean, grime wipes off.
-Lightweight and easy to handle.
Hermès Canvas
Canvas differs from other leathers immensely. In fact, Canvas isn’t even a true leather; it’s actually an incredibly sturdy and durable cloth. However, in the world of Hermes fashion, canvas is treated and combined with several other leathers to create a strong exterior that can withstand just about anything. You’ll find canvas on many of their bags, one of the most popular being the Hermes Herbag which is made up almost entirely of Canvas material.
Benefits of Hermes Canvas:
-Incredibly durable, making it a long-lasting bag that can withstand the elements.
-Typically easy to clean. Most spills and marks can be removed at home.
Hermès Fjord Leather
With a much wider and flatter grain from other types of leather (like Clemence), Fjord (A Vache or adult cow leather) is a matte-like leather made from adult cow hide. Benefits of Fjord leather:
-Completely water resistant.
-Gorgeous flat grain that has a matte-like appearance and texture, soft to touch.
Hermès Chevre de Coromandel Leather

Hermès Chevre Chamkila
One of several Chevre, or Goat, leathers currently being utilized by Hermès, Chamkila was first produced in 2018. It is a firm leather; Hermès notes that the name Chamkila means “shiny” in Hindi, and refers to the leather’s grain, which is small, smooth and also very shiny. Chamkila’s spine is less visible than in Mysore, and may even be less visible than in Chandra.
Hermès Chevre Chandra
Another of the chevre leathers currently produced by Hermès. The spine of Chamkila is less pronounced than in Mysore, but in person is more visible than in Chandra.
Hermès Gulliver Leather and Swift Leather
Gulliver Leather, which was discontinued in the year 1999, was reintroduced in 2005 to what we all know as Swift Leather. This type of leather has a fine grain with a luminosity that seems to shimmer in the sunlight. Swift Leather has the ability to reflect light while also being a superior dye absorbent, making colours appear brighter and more vibrant. Although this type of leather may be scratched easily, small scratches can be whisked away easily.
Benefits of Gulliver/Swift Leather:
-Enhanced luminosity, making colours appear brighter and more radiant.
-Glistens against the sunlight.
-Is very soft to touch, which makes scratching easier (but minor scratching can be rubbed off).
Hermès Novillo
Novillo is supple and has a very small grain. Introduced in 2015, the texture of Novillo can resemble Togo or Evercolor, but it is less structured, more prone to scratches and takes color very well. Novillo has a substantial feel and becomes softer and develops a sheen over time.
Hermès Crocodylus Niloticus Shiney Leather
This fine leather comes all the way from Africa’s Nile River region located in Zimbabwe. Derived from the Nile Crocodile, this leather comes with a very large scale pattern. Compared to other leathers, the Crocodylus Niloticus in not only larger in scale size, but is also glossier and shiny thanks to the continuous buffing- thus giving it the ‘shiny leather’ name. You can easily note when a Hermes bag is made with this type of leather as you’ll see two apostrophes located within the bag.
Benefits of Crocodylus Niloticus:
-Extremely shiny and glossier than other leathers.
-Has large, very visible scales and though care must be taken when rain, its very resilient.
Hermès Crocodylus Niloticus Matte Leather
Much like its sister leather Crocodylus Niloticus Shiny Leather, this particular leather comes directly out of Africa’s Nile River in the region of Zimbabwe. However, although they are derived from the same type of crocodile, Crocodylus Niloticus Matte Leather is not given hours of continuous buffing. Instead it is left with a matte finish, giving it a more distinct pattern. This leather also has the larger scales that are highly sought after in the fashion industry. You can also decide whether or not your Hermes bag is made with this type of leather by finding the two apostrophes signs somewhere on the purse. This leather must not get wet, care must be taken in rain. Stain or wet can create a permanent damage.
Hermès Crocodylus Porosus Leather
Another popular leather from crocodile, the sensational Crocodylus Porosus Leather is a stunning and vibrant leather that shines for miles. It’s dazzle, much like the Crocodylus Niloticus Shiny, is brought on by hours of continuous buffering. However, unlike its cousin Crocodylus leathers, this particular crocodile leather is farmed in the area of Australia and Southeast Asian, one of the most common locations being Singapore. To decide whether or not your Hermes bag is made with Crocodylus Porosus Leather, search for the ^ symbol. Care must be taken to avoid getting wet or rain.
Hermès Ostrich Leather
Ostrich leather as very significant characteristics that make it stand out from other leathers and darkens when it comes into contact with skin, yet will become lighter when it is exposed to light- whether it’s sunlight or a lamp. Only a cloth is needed to wiped down the rain, if you care and maintain enough, it can last for years.
Hermès Veau Grain Lisse Leather
Veau Grain Lisse, or simply known as ‘VGL’ Leather, is very similar to the Epsom. In fact, many believe the Epsom replaced this leather when VGL was discontinued in 2002-2003. However, many bags are still circulating with Veau Grain Lisse. Its a very lightweight leather with obvious grains, although the grains are less angular than those found in the Epsom. It is another type of popular embossed leather, which means it is completely scratch resistant and easy to clean.
Benefits of Veau Grain Lisse or VGL:
-Scratch resistant.
-Easy to clean thanks to the embossed leather.
-Visible grains.
Hermès Veau Tadelakt Leather
If you were just to take a glance at Veau Tadelakt Leather, you might assume it’s Box Calf. In fact, Veau Tadelakt and Box Calf leather share a lot of the same qualities and features, but the exterior of Veau Tadelakt is much softer than Box Calf. It also has no visible grains on the outside, which gives it its utterly smooth appearance.Often produced in colors which the leather can showcase extremely well, taking on an iridescent sheen not seen in other Hermès leathers. Pieces will retain their shape over time and though some have found Tadelakt to be prone to scratches, this is no more so than Swift.
Drawbacks of Veau Tadelakt Leather:
-Can appear mottled or very faintly streaked and may blister when wet;
Hermès Barenia Natural Leather
Originally used for Hermes saddles, this high quality calf leather is undoubtedly one of the best. It has an impeccably smooth exterior with just the right amount of gloss to make it dazzle and shine. It’s typically mixed in with white top stitch, which only adds to its great appearance and durability. But besides its flawless exterior, this handy bag is also completely scratch resistant thanks to the oil absorbing material, and also works wonders during the rainy seasons as it is resistant to water. This type of leather does, however, develop patina over a series of time.
Hermès Barenia Faubourg
Although Barenia Faubourg is designated as a Heritage Leather, it was only introduced in 2016. Considered by Hermès a “reinterpretation of Barenia calfskin”, it has a similar relaxed look and acquires a patina and darkens like Barenia, although it is more supple (flexible, bendable) than Barenia, is more stain- and scratch-resistant, and has a small printed grain. Barenia Faubourg, like Barenia, can have a streaked appearance. It also has an unfoiled blindstamp.
Benefits of Barenia Leather:
-Stunning exterior that is smooth and glossy.
-Very durable material that is resistant to scratches. A few swipes with finger can remove the scratches.
-Also resistant to water, so no worry of water marks.
Hermès Evercalf
Evercalf is very similar in appearance to Boxcalf, but is softer, smoother and looks more matte. It is very smooth and rigid like Box, but it is also prone to scratches (though not quite as much as Box) and will develop a patina; however, unlike Box, the color on Evercalf can fade and this leather cannot be refurbished.
Hermès Evercolor
Evercolor is soft and appears almost smooth but has a tiny, printed grain. Introduced in 2012 and related to – but more durable than – both Evercalf and Evergrain, Evercolor has a slight sheen and will soften over time.
Hermès Evergrain Leather
Introduced in 2004 this beautiful leather is known as the embossed version of the ever-popular Evercalf leather, (essentially Evercalf with a printed grain). However, unlike other embossed leathers that can feel rough or stiff it will become shiny and softer over time. However, one flaw about this soft leather is that it is prone to scratching thanks to its incredibly fine grain. Small scratches can easily be removed by rubbing of the fingers, while larger scratches may have to be buffed out by a professional.
Benefits of Evergrain Leather:
-Very fine grain that is soft to touch.
-Small scratches are easily removable.
Hermès Negonda Leather
Neogonda Leather is soft pliable and can easily be described as being ‘overly matte’ or feeling rather dry to touch, but that certainly works in this leathers favour, seeing as how it is only used in Garden Party bags. The specific reason for this? This matte type of leather is completely resistant to water. It could stand in pouring rain all day, become completely drenched, and still hold up without problem. Designed in 2007 specifically for the Garden Party Collection, it differs from other Garden Party leathers thanks to its unique colours.
Hermès Veau Sikkim Leather
Veau Sikkim Leather is undoubtedly one of the softest leathers on the market, and gives handbags more of a slouched appearance. It is so amazingly soft that many say that Veau Sikkim Leather resembles Box Calf leather, although the Veau Sikkim has little to no grain, thus giving it its ultra soft feel. It is also a lot less stiff than its sister leather the Box Calf.
Benefits of Veau Sikkim Leather:
-Ultra smooth.
-Gives bags a slouched look.
Hermès Lizard
While crocodile and alligator are the most popular forms of exotic skin used by Hermes, they also use a select number of different skins as well, such as lizard. With Hermes seldom using this skin for new products, this is certainly a rare skin and thus it is fantastic to invest in one. This skin is identifiable by a ‘-’ sign next to the Hermes logo, while it also has small scales that provides a noticeably glossy finish. As one of Hermes’ most delicate skins, it requires a lot of special attention to avoid drying and peeling, thus it must be kept at a comfortable temperature. Due to the size of the African monitor lizards that Hermes use for the pieces, lizard skin is generally used for smaller handbags and accessories.
Hermès Alligator
Another luxury skin that Hermes uses is alligator. Not to be confused with crocodile, alligator tends to be sourced from Florida in the United States and its scales tend to be more patterned than crocodile. Other aspects of indication include a square symbol near the embossed Hermes logo and a prominent umbilical scar to portray authenticity. Alligator pieces also come in both matt and shiny (lisse) varieties.
Hermès Country Leather
A processed female calf leather, the Country Leather is famed for its fair firmness. A relatively new addition to the Hermès leather collection, this leather was only released in 2012. It is mainly used for the Garden Party lineup and offers a strong protection against everyday wear as well as a large grain size for a unique pattern. Slightly more structured than Negonda and a little heavier.
Hermès Vache Liegee Leather
Noted for being the thickest and most durable of the Hermes hides, (which makes any bag made with this leather hold its shape very well,) and has a multi dimensional quality that adds depth to the finish. Hermès Vache Liegee first made its appearance in 2004 to replace Ardennes leather and was the most expensive non-exotic leather available at Hermès during the time it was produced.

Hermès Etoile, Toile Leather
If you’re seeking a bag that is different from the rest appearance wise, then Etoile, Toile Leather is a great choice. Specifically, Etoile, Toile Leather is used a complementing material to leather in some handbags. It is made of linen, thus giving it its linen/canvas appearance. An added bonus, the linen is very strong which means it can last for several years without flaws though this type of material may stain easily.
Benefits of Etoile, Toile Leather:
-Distinct outer exterior.
-Incredibly strong and durable material that can withstand the elements.
Hermès Doblis
Doblis is Hermès’ version of suede. First utilized for bags in the 1930s, it is generally limited to small bags and clutches. Doblis is very soft and supple; while scratches can be buffed out, as with all suede it cannot get wet, and it will get shiny in the areas where it is most handled.
Hermès Galop d’Hermès
Similar to the long-discontinued Ardennes leather, Galop d’Hermès is a recent addition and currently only available in a few, neutral colors (Noir, Indigo, Fauve, Ebene). It is relatively lightweight, matte and rigid, with a flat, variable grain. To date it has mostly been utilized for Men’s and some small Women’s Bags.
Hermès Grizzly
Grizzly is a calfskin suede leather first produced in 2010. Soft and supple, it is distinguishable from Doblis, with a thicker texture (nap) and rougher looking appearance which is created by using large skins and sanding the leather. Like Doblis, Grizzly is also delicate; the corners will wear easily and the bag will develop a patina where frequently handled.Grizzly has a thicker texture than Doblis. Due to the delicate nature of this leather, Grizzly bags often have handles made from a sturdier leather.
Hermès Jonathan
Jonathan is very similar to Swift: smooth, soft, faintly mottled and with a very fine grain. However, Jonathan is a stiffer leather than Swift and retains its shape much better.
Hermès Madame
Madame is a lightweight, stamped leather like Epsom, but has a softer feel, a much finer grain, and is less scratch-resistant. Introduced in 2019, Madame also has a slight sheen and maintains its shape well.
Hermès Maurice
Introduced in 2017, Maurice is, like Clemence, produced from Bullcalf but has a small, even grain and slight luster which will become more pronounced over time. It is substantial, supple and takes colors very well.
Hermès Monsieur
Monsieur, a smooth, substantial leather with a subtle sheen, was inspired by Box. First produced in 2018, the name “Monsieur” refers to the title given to the King’s younger brother during the Ancien Regime (the Kingdom of France from the late Middle Ages until the French Revolution); similarly, Monsieur is considered like a younger brother to Box, arguably the “King” of Hermès leathers. Monsieur is said to generally keep its shape well over time, although it will take on a deeper sheen in the areas that are most frequently handled.
Hermès Monsieur Grainee
Monsieur Grainee is a durable leather similar to Epsom in that it is rigid and firm but smoother, with a finer grain and a more natural feel and appearance.
Hermès Naturel (Vache Naturelle)
Vache Naturel is an untreated, smooth leather that is considered to be very delicate; easily stained and scratched, Vache Naturel will develop spots if it gets wet and the handles will darken with use; however, the leather will also develop a beautiful patina over time, and if cared for can last for several decades.
Hermès Volynka
Volynka was first produced in 2018 after Hermès spent years researching and reproducing a traditional Russian technique, which includes a very slow tanning process and a bath in a combination of certain barks and birch tar oil. Volynka is distinguishable by its unique reddish-brown color and diamond-shaped grain; it also has some irregular veining and a distinctive scent. Each Volynka item comes with a brush to minimize the appearance of a thin white film (called “bloom”) that develops when fats in the leather crystallize on the surface. Over time, Volynka will also develop a patina.
