Only handled for photographs and inspection, the reason for the *notation is due to the light surface impressions to the hide, where the chain has rested in storage. A single curved impression to the front, upper, LH side and a cluster of small dips to the RH side, upper front. Shown in the close up photos above, the depth of the impressions look far more noticable on camera than to the naked eye.
